In our current culture many times pride is seen as something good. Feeling good about one's accomplishments, feeling pleasure about one's skill, having healthy self-esteem. Nothing wrong with any of this if it is balanced. But unhealthy pride can be extremely destructive to an individual or to others. Unchecked pride leads to narcissism.
Narcissism: concerned excessively or exclusively with oneself; seeking or concentrating on one's own advantage, pleasure, or well-being without regard for others; arising from concern with one's own welfare or advantage in disregard of others.
- Pride is being SELF-ish
- Thinking excessively about SELF
- Pride’s base is too much SELF-love
- Thinking the worth of our SELF is higher than it actually is
- SELF-worship
- Preoccupation with our image or SELF
- Pride is narcissism (in love with our image or SELF)
- Pride is SELF-centered or EGO-centric (everything revolves around us)
- Pride wants to keep the focus on SELF
- SELF-ness
Humility
The opposite of being prideful is being humble. BEING HUMBLE MATTERS. A leader that is not humble can be a dangerous leader. A leader that is not humble will walk over people to accomplish their goals. A leader that is not humble is more concerned about winning than what is best. A leader that is not humble will never acknowledge that they are wrong, that they have erred, everyone else is the problem. A leader that is not humble will usually surround themselves with weak individuals they can control or 'yes men'. A leader that is not humble refuses godly counsel, refuses to seek advice, and sees anyone that does not agree with them as evil and out to harm them.
God and Pride
“God opposes, resists, abhors, tears down, brings down. has scattered, is scornful to, reprimands, will punish, is angry at, every arrogant person, those who have a proud look, those whose pride wells up, arrogant scoffers. “The prideful man – will be brought low, humiliated, disgraced, doomed, destroyed, humbled, will not go unpunished, was deposed from his royal throne and his honor was removed.” Prov 3:34,11:2, 16:5, 15:25, 29:23, Ps. 18:27, 101:5, 119:21, Is. 2:11,12,10:12, 2 Chr. 32:25, Dan. 5:20, Luke 1:51, James 4:6.
Confidence and Bold
It should be noted that there is a difference between unhealthy pride and being a person who is confident and bold in their convictions. This is a good trait. The way to know the difference is that a person who is confident and bold will also be humble. They will acknowledge their shortcomings and errors. They will excuse or blame others for their failings.
Fairfield Bay Pride
US vs Them Mentality. Our side cares about the City but your side does not. We know what is best for the City your side does not.Our leader does no wrong but your leader does. Our leader has pure motives, your leader does not. You must agree with everything we do because we are always right. If you do not agree with us we will humiliate and punish you. Pride goes as far as to the end justifies the means.
Pray, Pray, Pray
Pray for all the leaders of Fairfield Bay, City Government, Fairfield Bay Community Club, Fairfield Bay organizations. Pray that they will understand the importance of not letting pride control them. Pray if they are operating out of unhealthy pride that they will be convicted by God to repent. Pray for public repentance. Pray that the leaders will humble themselves before God must humble them. Pray ALL leaders will put the needs of the City above any of their desires. Pray that if there is any evil behind closed doors that it gets exposed. Pray the Lord will deal with all the arrogant, prideful, antagonistic, self-righteous ones that are tearing apart people in ungodly ways.
